Chinese Production
China has become the most efficient and productive farming countries in the world. China has the worlds highest population and agricultural output yet only 15% of China can be cultivated. China only has 10% on the worlds arable land and uses that to feed 20% of the worlds population. China's limited space for farming has been a problem throughout its history, leading to chronic food shortage. Cities soon resorted to peri-urban agriculture where cities soon became responsible for producing their own milk and vegetables. About 75% of China's cultivated area is used for food crops. China's most important food crop is rice which consumes about 25% of the cultivated land. China grows a wide assortment of crops like rice, wheat, potatoes, sorghum, peanuts, tea, millet, barley, and oil seed. |
China may be the leader in farming output but it is also one of the leaders in importing food crops too. China produces plenty of crops to feed their people but if there is a down year they have to import. Even though most farms are dedicated to rice, many farmers sacrifice a part of their land to grow more valuable crops to export and then import the cheaper grain and rice.
